Its a project that is, hands down, his most personal to date. Jay Z returned in 2017 with a new album called 4:44. Dropping conscious bars over trendy production with catchy hooks and powerful imagery via videos is him stuffing the stat sheet. Kendrick Lamar probably could be viewed as one of the leaders, as his album DAMN furthered his legend and stellar catalog. Some of it also found its way to the airwaves. The primarily acoustic "Write at Home" involves more cooks - keys from Robert Glasper, spoken word from Datcha, vocal sweetening from Bilal - but closes out the album in purposeful, elegant form. "The One I Love" features BJ the Chicago Kid's confident hook, sampled Sampha on the brink of tears in the background, and even a Stevie Wonder-like harmonica outro from Frédéric Yonnet. The comparatively lighter tracks are necessary for balance but are cluttered on occasion.
